Three properties to recognise
Wave height measures vertical size; period is the time between successive waves at a fixed point; direction describes where waves come from. Significant wave height is an average of the highest third, not a maximum.
Keep the wave components separate
In FishMeteo, read the total-wave, wind-wave and swell columns with their periods and directions. Do not add the listed component heights yourself. If a field is missing, leave it unknown rather than treating it as zero.
Compare a time window, not a headline
Choose the day and hours you intend to visit. Compare the same fields at another spot, keeping units visible. Add a note about the place you will stand or the route you intend to take, so your comparison has a clear purpose.
Use the forecast as preparation
A forecast number alone is not permission to fish from an exposed rock or take a boat out. Check local warnings and access guidance. Keep your own observations in a journal and be ready to change the plan.
Try it on your next trip
- Read height, period and direction together.
- Check both wind waves and swell; preserve missing values.
- Compare the full trip window and check local warnings.
