Chance of rain and rainfall amount: a fishing forecast guide

A percentage, a rainfall amount and a rain-cloud icon answer different questions. Keep them separate when deciding what information you still need before leaving.

A percentage is not a rainfall amount

Precipitation probability describes the chance of measurable precipitation at a point during a stated period. It does not mean that rain lasts for that percentage of the period. Check the provider’s period and definition when comparing forecasts.

Read the hourly amount alongside it

In the FishMeteo hourly table, compare rain probability with rainfall in millimetres on the same row. Record the hour and unit. Do not add several hourly percentages to calculate a daily probability, or treat a missing amount as zero.

Cover the journey as well as the fishing

Mark the arrival, fishing and return hours. Check those rows again before departure instead of making the whole decision from a daily icon. Keep official warning checks separate; a small percentage is not a substitute for them.

Record what actually happened

Afterward, note when you observed rain, which spot you were at and whether you changed the plan. A useful comparison includes the forecast you saw before leaving and the time you checked it, not only a later screenshot.

Try it on your next trip

  1. Check the percentage, forecast period and millimetres separately.
  2. Compare the actual hours you will be outside.
  3. Save your forecast check and observations in a FishMeteo journal entry.
